In 2021, Mersey Rowing Club re-started its junior rowing squad, on a very small scale.

“We started small at first recruiting a group of 14 enthusiastic children (more like four at first) from age 12 and up from different backgrounds across the Liverpool City Region using a mixture of social media, word of mouth and introduction to rowing sessions. Our goal is to offer the opportunity for every High School child in Liverpool to try rowing and to create a community where they can take part in this amazing sport, regardless of their background or family financial situation."

The Love Rowing funding for this project has allowed two new coaches to be trained.  These coaches are now able to delivery sessions themselves and has enabled us to increase our weekly sessions to juniors from two to three.  We have now been able to increase the capacity of the squad and accept new junior rowers, teaching them how to row.  They’re now able to enjoy meeting other children, learn a new sport and develop healthy habits.

The biggest challenge we face is recruiting coaches to allow us to increase our capacity.

It’s an ongoing project that will continue indefinitely as Mersey Rowing Club can see the positive impact it has had on the young people.
